Once again i,m back with a hard one. Battery died in the heat of Floyd (hurricane)I took the car to get the alternator checked along with the battery (1987 300 E) they told me that the alternator was not charging the battery fully, so i should change the alternator, after spending $250.00 for a rebuilt alternator installing it come to find out the mechanic said the new alternator is also bad. Now could this be possible ? or is there something that could be causing the low reading. Please help have to take car back tommorrow.

Oh, yes, the good ol' yank out the alternator deal....
Remote chance the only thing that was wrong with the old one was the voltage regulator ?
Most of the time V.R. is what wears out due to two friction contacts and very rarely does the alternator itself go bad. When the contacts wear down, charging becomes intermittent until it does not make any contact at all.
The V.R. is mounted on the alternator with two screws and there are no wires involved.
There's a chance you may need an extremly short screwdriver if space is tight.
This is what I'm familiar with among the diesels, and I suspect most others are similar.
Good luck, and hope you have the opportunity to examine the older unit if it's still around.
I'm wondering if the shop should've checked the V.R. first ?

Apparently, this is common. It took three tries, leaving me stranded 3 times, to get the alternator right on the 300E. Seems like they would test these things when they put them in.

Here is the whole deal from a tech!
been there and done that!
When the cars wear, they draw more current. IE the fuel pumps and the blower motor and the aux fans use a little more current when old than when first built. I have seen where the original alt is just barely adequate to run all of these at once. To CURE the problem, I just installed the higher amp alt from a diesel and soldered the two output wires to one and installed a ring connector on the end to adapt to the higher amp alt.
Good luck
I have done 3 this way with no comebacks! Two had big amps for the stereo that drew alot of power.

Benzmac,
which year and make diesel altenator for the 86 300E? Is it a direct bolt in replacement? Also what is a ring connector, an adaptor for the altenator plug? Sounds like a really cool way to pump up the amps.
Thank you,
Chris C.

I think the alt is off of the 87 300D. It did bolt right on pulley and all. I had to re-solder the connection and that was all.
Good luck.
