Question something hot and no instrument cluster lights

1984 380 SL = Two issues:

When I push my EC or other buttons on my climate control unit, I initially notice a smell like hot or burning wires momentarily. No fuses blow. I have noticed that my interior temp fluctuates a bit.....to make more comfortable, I have to mess with the temp wheel occasionaly. Could this be a faulty interior temp sensor? If so, how do you get that thing out of the dash console?

My instrument cluster lights and shift console area lights are inoperative. The little black knob does nothing when rotated to solve problem. Can the little black light knob on the instrument cluster be replaced...also there are no blown fuses.

Appreciate comments.....older guy who is new at this.
Thanks!
Jim

Jim:
Don't know about your first problem. However, your second problem is more than likely the potentiometer switch . A lot of times you can fix them by turning them rapidly from left to right, spinning it between two fingers, upwards of 50+ times. The spinning can break through corrosion if it's the problem. If that doesn't work, you can either replace the pot., or permanently jump the connection, the latter of the two eliminating any brightness adjustments. Try the spinning, worked on my Jeep (which still has to be wiggled every now and then)
