Starter Trouble

Well I've got my own starter trouble now. The car is a 1987 190D. The starter engages instantly when the key is turned and the engine starts immediately, also. However, as soon the engine starts I hear a whizzzzz sound like the starter motor freewheeling. The sound stops as soon as you release the key from the start position.

Any ideas? Is the starter supposed to automatically disengage mechanically or electrically once the engine starts? Does this mean the starter is on its last legs? Can I remove and clean/ re-lube the starter and solenoid mechanism?

Thanks in advance for the feedback.
