Red face Thumping going over small bumps

Hello, I have a thumping sound coming from my front-end when driving over small bumps like a man hole cover. When hitting sizable bumps the thumping is not present-only the normal shock absorbing pulse. Anyone know what this could be? Is it normal?

Thanks,

LB

Talking Thumping...

My car is a 1994 e320 with 87k. Runs well and very easy to drive.

If it were my car I would first check the front wheel bearing adjustment. Try grabbing the top of the tire (car stopped of course) and rock. If the wheel bearings are really loose you'll feel it as a slight clunck ... clunk. Check both sides.

Although obvious, you could also test the wheel lug-nut tightness. Are you sure they are all snug and torqued properly?

Or if you are mechanically inclined, take off the wheel, pull off the dust cover in the hub center, get an allen that fits and adjust. This would also be a good time to make sure the wheel bearing has enough grease.

Have you had a FULL service recently?

haasman gives good advice, but also replace the sway bar bushings, all four of them. fairly easy repair if you are so inclined, parts are about $25-30. Can buy them via this site.

Both wagons (94+95) we have owned had the exact same noises at the exact same mileage.... really amazing how noisy considering its only 4 rubber bushings gone slack.
