changing adaptive ignition setting in 2000 S500

I have heard that MB sets engine control programs in all US MB's at a baseline, which is pretty conservative. Can you go in with a Star Diagnose machine and reset the adaptive ignition program to 93 octane, which cranks up timing 6 degrees at all levels, increasing hp? I read that this can be done with 2001 MB's and wondering about my 2000 MY.
Thanks

I think it can be done on as early as 98.

ignition setting

Steve, thanks for the info. What do you think of the idea of changing this setting for additional performance? Would you do it if it was your car?

I have done it to my wife's ML. Its not a great difference. I drive lots of them and hers does well but I'm not sure I could pick hers from a group not so adjusted.

ignition enhancement

What sized motor is your wife's car? I am wondering if the results might be better in a larger engine.
Maybe chiptuning would give me better results. Do you have any experience or recommendations re chiptuners?
Thanks again.
