Speedometer Cluster Swap

I have had the gears in my 1998 300se odometer replaced twice.
Apparently the heat in North Carolina degrades these plastic gears quickly. Why can't MB make better gears?

Does anybody know what cluster will replace mine? I don't want one which will throw off my speedo/odo. Somebody told me a 420sel won't work but one from a 560sel will.

The speedometers are made by VDO, not MB. If the plastic gears are not lasting, the problem is that the mechanism is binding. You can carefully file the pinched points off the end of the odometer shafts, slide them out, clean everything and lubricate, then slide the shafts back into place and peen the ends.

Good luck,

Thanks Larry but I believe that this set of gears is broken also.

I would like to find a used cluster and just swap them out. BTW, my 300se is a 1989 not '98.
