battery drain

I have a 1997 C230 with original battery. Lately the car wont start and when I check the battery its dead. I charge the battery and everything is fine for 3-4 weeks, then it starts all over again. The alternator and battery have been checked and both put out the necessary specifications. I have checked for the obvious drains, inside lights , glove box, trunk everything is working. My mechanic said we should just replace the battery because of age.
Any ideas??

Your lucky it lasted this long.

Ok, start with a fully charged battery, disable the trunk lamp, close the latch (with the trunk open) and check for dark current draw, if its over .5 amps, start hunting, otherwise, get a new battery. (spec is more like .2 to .3 but I've noticed a lot of them with .4 and .5, as long as driven frequently that do fine)

check fluids

if you are able to check the fluid level in the cells.your problems/procedures are what i went through when my battery was about the same age.not knowing enough to check the cells early on i was left with no alternative but to change the battery.at the end i did top off the cells but i think it was too little too late.another thing i didn't know of was different batteries.if i was to do it over again i would have replaced with optima providing it would fit

Went to my mechanic and he put the battery under a heavy load. Turns out 1 cell was dead, this didn't show up on the hand- held testers. New battery and i am on my way.
Thanks for all the help
