95 S320 odometer - tamper proof?
Where is the odometer value of a 95 S320 stored? If you change the gauge cluster and/or ECU, what does that do to the odometer value?
The overall question is, how tamper proof is the odometer on a W140? Thanks, Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

Depends on your speedo. The early 140 odo was mechanical and as susepible as all speedos to manipulation. All replacements are digital and they are alterable right through the diagnostic port. They are now the least protected they have ever been. See this site: http://www.megachip.de/en/index.html
There are numerous software folks doing this type of repairs. The manuafacturers are trying many different hardware and software locks but this stuff ain't national security and they have trouble keeping that under wraps.

It's called "cracking" and altering a digital odo is easier that the 'ol mechanical kind. There is no shortage of crooks out there doing it. MB should be taking greater steps to stop it. Look at the SmartKey. Damn thing is unbreakable. You'd think they could come up with some sort of system to stop odo tampering.
