Jet-like sound from automatic transmission
Jet-like sound from automatic transmission
A question about the automatic transmission: I have a 93 220 CE with 165000 km on it. It shifts perfectly, but each time when launch from stand still, I can hear it makes a special sound, it sounds like a jet turbine just starts. It dissapears almost as soon as the car starts to move and is gone by the time the transmission shifts to the second gear under light pedal pressure. Could it be coming from the torque converter as it winds up to move the vehicle? I have changed the oil and filter regularly but that does not help. I have noticed that others have similar problems, see user CarMan850 for example. I'm greatful for some tips on this! |

Do you have a catylitic converter? I had a similar noise coming from my car and I thought it was the tranny. My mech and I put the car up and listened very carefully and isolated the noise to the cats. Still haven't changed them out though...

Are you sure it is not just first gear whine? Try selecting low to hold first gear and listen for a typical gear whine that is common and normal in low gear.
