My kids drove my 84 300D (210K) the other day and reported this: with the tank 3/4 full, the gauge needle started dropping and fuel was spewing out of the underside rear near the vent line. They parked it, and the next day when I got there, it started fine and the needle was registering 3/4 tank again, though there was a lot of diesel fuel on the ground.
Any ideas about what could cause both the guage problem and venting? Thanks. ------------------ CH |

What you are describing as vent line is possibly the fuel return line. Most of the fuel pumped to engine isn't used but returned to f/tank. Loss of fuel shouldn't have affect on tank reading until the tank is at that level.

Wild guess:
Moisture in fuel line, frozen near or around the return line. When the kids drove it the fuel was sprewed out of a hole in the return line due to frozen moisture. When you got there, the ambient temps were warmer and thus it returned to normal operations (fuel returning to the tank)? Haasman
