I need to remove the instrument panel to get at the clock for repair. I've read that with a coat-hanger type tool you can insert it at the 9 and 3 O'clock positions an dpull on the IP. Is this so? Any trouble I an get in? It's an 88 420SEL

Thanks...

The tool is much thinner and stronger than a coat hanger. It is a set of pullers. You do slide them in and turn them to catch the edge and be careful.

Dash removal,

I'm not sure if the dash in your 420 is the same set up as my 300SD 126, but I did make the dash removal tool out of a coat hanger. I looked at the tool in the MB manual and fabricated mine. It worked fine.

Then again, my vehicle is a little older, and the dash is probably not as tight, but it did work, with out paying the money for the factory tool.

Best of Luck.
