I filled up the car on Christmas day. I have driven the car until there was about 1/4 tank left. Now when I go to fill up, I only get about 2.5 litres in and the gas starts to overflow. It will go down, but very, very slowly. After driving, I can hear a suction like sound, and a faint "thunk", when I remove the gas cap... Any ideas? Air lock in the tank?...

The gas gauge is working properly, because I keep track of the mile and it lines up with where it is at...that is the first thing that I checked.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I've replaced a few fuel tanks on 202's and 208's( similar design ) to correct this problem. There's a flap at the bottom of the fuel neck that's supposed to open when re-fueling, but sometimes it doesn't open all the way. This causes the fuel nozzle at the filling station to shut off. The flap in question isn't accessible so there's no way of knowing for sure whether it's actually working or not. MB is aware of the problem, so it may be worth a call to your dealer to see if they can help. It's definitely noy a DIY job, as the rear sub-frame needs to be removed to replace the fuel tank. If I remember correctly, there may be a modified expansion tank/fuel neck available to correct this problem as well. I'm not sure, but I think this only applied to the 208's. Your dealer should be able to give you more information. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.

The filler neck was modified in 1998 to help with this problem, however those cars had problems from the first fill-up. The filler neck is a seperate part & I would start by having it removed & inspected.

Finally got the problem fixed. It was a carbon filter in the DRIVERS side rear, not to be mistaken with the expansion tank beside the filler neck (which they replaced first and didn't fix the problem). Also costed about twice as much too! Total with labour costed around $800... but now I can put gas in!

Do you mean the charcoal canister? What exactly was wrong with it?

It was some kind of fuel filter...part number 202-470-15-59...
They didn't tell me what was wrong. They replaced it with one from a car on their lot and it solved the problem, so they swapped the old one back in and ordered the new filter for me. They told me it can be damaged by being punctured (stones or driving over something...) or by topping off the gas tank (the extra gas fills into this filter).
Actually the dealership didn't tell me this, it was the technician from Mercedes Benz Canada that explained it to me, after I had made a request for Mercedes to cover some of the cost. They said that it was a wear and tear item... and so was my blower motor that went at approximately the same time! ($700 later!!) Thus, no help...

Mercedes are fun to drive but expensive to own!

Geez, MB does a whale of a business in W202 blower motors. Seems to me that it is a significant profit center for them...

202 HVAC blower motors are an easy DIY replacement, probably easier than an oil change, the blower motor can be gotten for under two hundred american dollars. All you need are a few torx and screw drivers.
Many times however the clicking sound from a blower motor is a leaf stuck in the plastic cage.

Every W202 owner I know has had at least one blower motor, some have had two. They are pretty easy, but at $300-400 CDN a pop without labour, it get's tiring ponying up.

Thank goodness they are a snap to change, unlike some other MB models...
