M103 Cap and Rotor toast at 30k miles
Hi All,
Car is a '92 300TE with 120k miles. After 30k miles, my Cap and Rotor are nasty. Big fuzzy black carbon tracks on all the points and the rotor is crusty and black. I will be replacing soon along with plugs and wires -- car is running smmothly, but a bit sluggish. Is this abnormally early? Does anyone know what could cause this? Unfortunately, car does get it's fair share of short trips. The only thing I could think of off the top of my head is a weak ground somewhere -- or possibly a failing coil?

What make are your cap & rotor?
OEM or aftermarket ? Since the rotor is in constant contact with the carbon tip of the cap, you will always see black carbon powder. Besides, I would install a new cap & rotor with 30 k miles on it anyway.

I have a 92 190E 2.6 with 142,000 miles on the origional rotor and cap. I did pull them at 60,000 and they were ok, just a little white oxidation buildup on the cap. I can't imagine that they would be faulty after 30k. The only normal black dust would be from the carbon brush but should not be that much.
