Question Octane rating -anti-knock or less carbon deposit?

I was under the inpression that Octane rating was a measure for the amount of ANTI-KNOCK solution in the gas. I read in the Owner's manual for my E-320 (W210) that it is recommended the Owner never uses anything less than 91 Octane because it will cause Carbon deposit in your engine.... Here is my question:

Does higher Octane also reduce the likelihood of carbon-deposits??

Thanks beforehand

If you use lower octane fuel, the engine will retard the timing to prevent knocking.

There is no such thing as an anti-knock solution in gasoline. The anti-knock properties are acheived with the use of a slightly different refining process and a different blends of the gasoline components.
Using lower octane gasoline can (only can, not necessarily) promote some carbon deposits because of the retarded ignition but it would take a lot of mileage to be able to notice a major difference.
