134a A/c Gauges

JUST purchased a set of 134A a/c gauges from local parts store. there is a blue and red for high and vacuum side. But there is also a yellow one ???? Now basing on the fitting, there is a valve that automatically shuts when not connected, so I'm assuming that that's where the refrigerant bottle goes. Any thoughts?

jbaj007 offers very sound advice. It is very important that you study and know full well what you are doing. If you try to charge through the high side, you can blow up a refrigerant can in your face.

There are several really good manuals available through aircondition.com. There is also a link there to ackits.com. They have an excellent manual, I think from master cool.

Study up, be safe and enjoy fixing it yourself.

Good luck,

Thumbs up

Read alot about gauges and how to use them....
Ambient temp: 74
(remember I haven't done this before)

Attached the connectors with the quick connect system( idiot proof way of connecting the right hose to the right area)
Both pressures are down: low:10 HIgh :80
Upon starting the car, the pressures went up to Low:20 HIgh: 100
With that, I attached the 134A bottle and punctured it. Started to open the low side then suddenly the gauges came alive!!!!

After one 8oz can, the gauges read: low: 30 high: 225 , the fans cycled as the pressure goes up to 250 on the high. cold, not cool air blows out the vents--- GREAT! After I turned the engine off, I went around, below, inside the car with DETEK sniffer set on high sesitivity.....nothing........
be happy or be worried? Any thoughts?

I'd still be worried. How did you lose the refrigerant in the first place?

You used a sniffer and didn't find anything. Are any of the connections wet with refrigerant oil on the outside? I guess time will tell you if you have a leak.

You are correct on that... everything was dry as a bone. I do need to crawl under the thing and look at the underside of the compressor. It's a 1994 sl500 with barely 40k miles so maybe some of the refrigerant found it's way out somewhere....need to investigate more....thanks
