How loud is a running 1981 240D with manual transmission?

Dear friends:

If the muffler is removed from a 1981 240D with manual transmission, do you know HOW LOUD it will be when driving?
Will the engine detonation noise be completely unbearable to bystanders?

I need to drive my friend's car (muffler out) home for repair work, and wonder whether it is possible to drive it home (about 10 miles) without irritating other people too much.

Thank you very much for your precious help.

Best regards,

Eric

I wouldn't worry about it. Drive gently and the noise will be less than if you go WOT. Avoid residential neighborhoods before 9am or after 9PM and you shouldn't annoy too many people.

'Course you could always duct tape a shiny coffee can under the rear bumper for looks and pretend it's some aftermarket muffler designed to add a lot of sound with no real performance enhancement. You know, like all those Hondas out there!

As long as you take it easy you will probably be fine. You may want to wear ear plugs for your personal protection.
