Advise Seeked for Lift
I am planning to become a serious hobbyist. Can some of you recommend they type of lift that might be good for home use. I want a lot of undercar access and will be working on mostly cars and the occasional light truck. I have never used one but know a lot style wise, two post, four post, portable, scissors etc etc. I want to be safe. I do have a normal two-car garage and a blacktop driveway. The portables interest me in that I can use them outside too. I plan to spend about 3K on the thing. Any advise, experiences etc greatly appreciated.

I just looked at a post on another forum. If you go to the porsche 911 technical forum at pelican parts, dated 3/20 currently page three, "just got my lift", you will find a really good thread with pictures and sources for well under $3000.

One itsy bitsy little detail,,,, for a normal lift, you will need around 12 feet of headroom.

I would be cautious using a lift on blacktop. I used my floor jack once on my blacktop driveway, and it left indents. As a result, I now always bring the cars into the garage (on concrete) to jack them.

Thanks for the info referance to Pelican Parts. I do believe I'm going to do the Harbor Freight or Mohawk lift. Either should be OK for me. Also thanks for helping me make up my mind, my next toy car is going to be a nice old 911

I have the same problem on the blacktop when using the regular jack and stands. Really chewed up the upper part of the driveway. I'm kind of planning to have the upper section of d-way cut out and than I'll have a nice concrete slab poured (all a big maybe). Gotta do something about getting the cars in the air though, I'm ok working underneath, I just can't get back up :-)
