Fuel Gauge Only Goes to 7/8-No Gas Tank Pressure

My 99 E430 gas gauge is only reading 7/8 full after I fill up the tank. It's been doing this for the last few fill ups. I'm not sure if it's related, but I also notice I don't get that suction sound when I remove the gas cap. I recall always getting a de-pressurized sound when I used to remove the gas cap.

I've seen posts on trying fuel injection cleaner or cleaning or replacing the fuel sending unit. Anybody think that's my problem? I'm not comfortable removing and cleaning the fuel sending unit myself, but I wanted to get some feedback on what it might be before I bring it to the dealer and they charge me an arm and a leg replacing parts that aren't broken.

My fuel tank does the same thing

I also do not hear the suction when you open your gas cap and... my check engine light goes on at times and off other times.

I believe my problem has gone away. When examining my gas cap I notice a little bit of gas collecting on a portion of the gas cap. I removed the rubber seal, cleaned it off, cleaned off some dirt on the gas cap, then put the seal back. That seemed to have done the trick. My gas gauge finally reaches least after the last 4 fill ups.

I do notice, however, that the gauge goes about 95% full, then slowly inches to 100% full. I think I remember the gauge going 100% full immediately when the car was "new." Also, I still don't hear the suction action when I remove the gas cap. Maybe I just need to replace the rubber seal and/or the entire gas cap. For now, it's works well enough to NOT irritate me. :-)
