88 300E Driver Seat

I have a strange situation with my drive seat. When I bought the car it was hit on the driver side. Both doors were replaced. It appears that the driver seat was either bent or broken.

It will not recline and the right side of the back support won't stay in the the proper position, it keeps sliding back when I put any weight on it.

I've replaced the control unit for the seat to correct the reclining problem to no avail. The interesting thing is when I install the switch from the passenger door, it works just fine. It reclines, the headrest works, everything works fine. I purchased a new one from the dealer twice and I keep having the same problem. It only slides forward and backwards, when I push it up the seat goes down, when I push it down the seat goes up.

Any help with this? This is very frustrating....

I am NOT an expert on this. BUT, its possible that your current drivers seat is someody else's passenger side. There may be something that was not swapped correctly during the seat conversion that lets the passenger side seat control work. I had the drivers seat in my '87 300D replaced with a passenger seat because the drivers seat was worn out from a very heavy previous owner. Works fine.

Brian,

I had never given that a thought. Thanks for the suggestion. I have found a driver seat of a different color, is it possible to switch the covers and cushions?

Its possible to swap covered & pads. The mechanic who did the work on my car did so because he would MUCH rather make a passenger seat a drivers seat than fuss with seat covers and pads. You may be able to work thru changing the frame rails, etc from your "spare" drivers seat to your "current" drivers seat. I can't give specifics on the process since I've never done it or seen it done.

Brian,

Thanks a lot. I will probably have a mechanic take care of it for me.
