auto gearchange query

My 1994 C180 Euro seems to be changing from 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 and the 1 - 2 seems to be very short lived on a level road. This is in "R" mode. In the "E" mode, it seems to be the same, but the gears stretch for longer period and there doesn't seem to be a 1 at all i.e. 2 - 3 - 4. Is this the correct sequence?
