big problem with drivetrain

Hi everyone, I'm in great need of help with a problem I am having.

My car is making a very low rubbing sound with every turn of the wheels. I'm starting to think that this is making my car unsafe to drive and I'm actually afraid that something horrible will happen if I don't fix this soon.

First of all, it sounds like the sound is coming from the differential area, I had numerous people sit in the back and listen for it and no one can give me a left/right answer.

It becomes very noticable above 40kmph. It started not long after I had my flex discs replaced, which was done in a horrible way and I had to re assemble everything myself.

I noticed, that the metal piece (Universal flange, found it in the manual) that is between the rear flex disc and the differential has one of the holes for the screws worn quite a bit and I am now wondering if this is the problem. I have not noticed this before and I won't deny the possibility that the badly assembled driveshaft is responsible for wearing that part out.

I have checked the breakes, the bearings and the differential, all seem to be working fine. The differential makes a whirling sound from the gears spinning. I changed the oil in it as well and found quite a bit of metal in it, but there is no play in the differential. I'm not sure how much metal is allowed, but it was only very small pieces.

I need to find the cluprit by eliminating all other parts, I am hoping that someone had a similar problem and will be able to shed some light on this, or at least how to figure it out.

The hardest part for me is describing the sound itself. It does not sound like a metal on metal contact, it is a bit more rubberish. There is no squeak in there, it is sort of like the sound you will hear when a train passes you by at a high speed created by the air it pushes but on a much smaller scale. It occurs with every full revolution of the wheels, or wahtever comes after the transmission to drive the wheels. It sounds like something serious and big is going out.

I don't know what else to add, if anyone has any ideas and needs something clarified please let me know.

TIA

xp
