My maintenance booklet says that:

Every 45000 miles/2 years
Replace recirculated air filter 8383
Model 140
Replace activated charcoal prefilter 8384

Every 75000 miles/4 years
Replace activated charcoal filter 8382

As I understand, my car has a recirculated air filter (or dust/pollen filter) under the glove box, and a activated charcoal filter, but does not have a activated charcoal PREfilter. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) If the above is right, then my question is: Where is the charcoal filter? Is it a DIY job to replace it? If it is, a few tips would be appriciated. Thanks.

Your car has microfilter only. The later c-class use a charcoal mictofilter that fits in your car as well. But only W140 & W210 chassis have both microfilter & active charcoal filters.

Hi, M.B.Doc:

Thanks for your quick response. So when I replace my recirculated air filter (or microfilter), should I use a regular one, or the charcoal microfilter is prefered? What are the advantages or using charcoal microfilter? Do I get better filtration, and get rid of the bad smell if I am behind an oil-burner?

Charcoal filtering is designed to remove non-organic odors. So yes the newer version is better & will last twice as long. The part # is 210-830-08-18.
