Well if this condition was not present before, then I guess it would be a safe assumption that it is the gauge/hookup and not the car. If it was the car, wouldn't it have done it before? From what I hear, Palo Alto Speedometer are good gauge fixers. You'd have to take out your cluster (not hard) and send just the speedo or the whole thing in.
