Only recently I have noticed a noisy bearing type noise coming from around the front of my 95 C220 motor. It sort of sounds like a loud diesel motor. My friend seems to think it is the idler bearing. I'm going to soon have it checked out by my mechanic. Is my friend correct? Will I damage anything by driving the car. The car seems to drive fine with 46,000 miles. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Disconnect the drive belt and spin the idler pulley, if the bearing is rough enough to cause this noise, you will confirm that this is your problem if it feels rough when turned.
