Change it anyway; the newest part# is 112-035-13-00-05, and while I have been assured that it contains an entirely new rubber formulation to virtually eliminate this problem, I'll believe it when I see it... (yah, I'm from Missouri...)

98' ML320 Harmonic Balancer
My ML 320 caughed up the center of it's harmonic balancer last night. Rubber bushing is shot but everything else appears to be unharmed. Serpintine belt and all it's friends look fine.
Read all posts and have a few questions for the informed. May I just replace the rubber bushing or do I need a new pulley wheel? Estimated cost of part? Difficulty level for shade tree tech with a box of Sears tools? Mucho thanks for any help- Brian |

2000 C280 Sport... 58K miles... lost balancer and poly-V-belt. Prior inspection at 55K miles revealed no faults.
Dealer provided 112 035 13 00 05 (balancer) and 006 990 70 04 (bolt) as replacement parts. |

The rubber ring is part of the harmonic balancer assembly. It is balanced as an assembly and the entire unit must be replaced. The cost of the part is under $100. The hardest part of the replacement is removing the bolt - it is on very tight. The best way to remove the bolt is to have the proper tool to hold the balancer. I replace mine without the tool and I spent alot of time removing the bolt. The new bolt must be put on just as tight - a long cheater bar helps.

I copied the following from alt.auto.mercedes news group today -
"A couple of months ago I posted about the vibration damper going bad on our 2000 E320 (40K miles) and damaging the oil pans, which resulted in a 1400 dollar repair. Our mechanic suggested we send a certified letter to MB USA suggesting that a part that had gone through six changes should have been recalled & that we would like some response. I did just that and yesterday received (from MB USA though dispensed through our local dealership--who BTW did not do the repair work) a check for the entire amount. I must say I'm surprised and very pleased." Maybe some of you folks out there that had the problem also could do the same! |

It happened to our (orginal owners) 1998 E 430 also. With 77,000 miles. We had to replace the Air Cond pump and top control arms at the same time . All different issues but all shockly early on for a car that had been very well taken car of.
Has anyone had any luck getting MB to stand up for any discounts or refunds on repairs like these> I sent Customer Care a letter and got a forum letter back with my name mis spelled! |

The harmonic balancer on my 1999, C43, 113-V8 is getting ready to fail. The rubber is pushed out on one section of the ring and is sure to fail in the next week or so.
I have started conversations with my dealer to get it fixed at MB's expense but they are putting up a little fight. Until then I cannot drive the car. Jeff |

1998 E320 Balancer Failure
It happend to my car with only 58K miles. It has damaged lot of front end components. I just got estimate today about $ 2,000 plus. There was no pre-alarm or indications.
If this is trend, is there recall notice issued? What members are doing for this? |

Go back through this thread, and you'll see that different people have gotten different responses from their dealers. If you're the original owner of the car, you may get some relief from the dealer. Of course if the car is under warranty they'll cover the whole thing. The shop foreman at Mercedes-Benz of Houston North, Charlie Johnson, tried to get Mercedes to help me out by covering the towing bill from Lufkin, and I would have paid for the repair. Since I am not the original owner, and the car was out of warranty, they refused to give me any relief. Ended up doing it myself, with a little advice from Charlie, who was very helpful. Fortunately for me the damage to the upper oil pan and front engine cover was only cosmetic.
Mercedes and NHTSA do not consider this to be a recall issue because it's not a safety problem. Good luck!

E320 Balancer Failure
Can anybody tell what are the things a customer should check visually or ask the dealer after MB dealer has completed the reapir work associated with failure of harmonic balancer, oil pan, belt, etc.? For example, part$ of new balancer to check if it is improved design, any noticeable vibration, any leak etc?

Happened to my wife's ('99 C280) car at about 39 kmiles. It damaged the timing chain cover and the oil pan. Cost over $2000. Good thing it was still under warranty. I look at it frequently ever since.

Harmonic Balancer Failure
Hmmm, ours seems to be on the early end, but...
Late production '96 S420, 88,500 miles, "pronounced wobble" in the main crank pulley and slapping noise as the tensioner flopped back and forth with the vibrating serpentine belt. Looks like it's gonna be HB, bolt, belt, front main seal, by the book. No more than a few hundred bucks, and the dealer is checking into getting MB to pay for the parts. Interesting reading the notes from techs on quality of newer Benzes. My dad swore by them. My wife's dad does too, but his last was a late '80s SEL. I never owned one. Bought my wife the used '96 with 37,500 miles a few years ago -- looked new and hardly broken in for a car that should run a quarter million miles without breathing hard. I said, "No dear, anything that costs THAT much we experiment with a USED one first. Well, the bumper-bumper warranty that came with it paid out about $17,000 in repairs over two years, and we've paid out a bit less than $4,000. Not encouraging. |

I am very appreciative for this forum on this issue! My car is a 98 E320 wagon with 80k. I checked out the balancer and it is the original part#. The rubber is just starting to show the signs. Took it to the dealer I purchased it from used, (Mercedes of Tacoma, Wa). The service writer, Sandy was honest and forthcoming with me and offered to replace the unit including parts & labor for less than $100. I purchased an aftermarket warranty from them in which the part was not covered, so I am pleased on the outcome. I set an appointment next week for the work to be done. I was curious if there are any other issues I should be concerned about on this particular model?
I have 3 other 124's which have been bulletproof and which I might add the build quality and materials are far better, however the 210 is a rocketship compared to my inline 6's even with the added weight....Gary |
