Valve cover gasket replacement on a 2.6L

My valve cover gasket is leaking oil. It runs to the exhaust header and emits that well known foul odor.

Also, there appears to be oil seeping at the head gasket, below the exhaust.

The car is a 1987 260E with the 2.6L engine.

I'd appreciate knowing if the replacement of either of these is a colossal undertaking for an experienced "shadetree" mechanic. Are there any other parts or procedures which should be replaced/done during this procedure?

Valve cover, AKA (camshaft cover is not a big deal to get at. Just remove the cover (six bolts I believe) clean up the head surface and the gasket channel on the cover. Important--new gasket has to be properly aligned and you should use the recommended sealant. A good second choice for sealant is Permatex RTV Blue. After you get the cover back on, clean off the block in the area you suspect the head gasket is leaking (big job $$$$ to replace that part), drive it for a while and see what happens. Hopefully, what you were looking at was seepage from the camshaft cover.

Do not use any sealant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These go on DRY....Just dry off both surfaces using an alcohol based cleaner and install the new gasket. Be sure to feel of the rear and make sure the cam plug is positioned properly. You will be fine.
