Engine mount R&R W126 - illustrated
I suspect these are parts which get replaced too late, on average.
They take a particularly severe pounding in the diesel. Go to Cars - Technical - Chassis on my site. Enjoy! |

I LOVE IT...
Your site just keeps getting better, and better.. That's on my "to do list".. Guess it's no real hurry, since it really doesn't seem to hurt anything, but they are a little flat...

Damn, Thomas, you're making the rest of us look bad!
How do you find the time to do all of these jobs? You must work on your car in the evenings after work and on the weekends. Nice to see the two additional assistants, Winston and your wife, but what happened to your tried and true assistant on the previous jobs - Bertie? Did the criticism get to you finally?

Bertie hates the smell of diesel and most of the recent work has been fixing deferred maintenance on the 300SD.
At least I finally got my wife to help! Had to remind her who maintains her SLC. |

Wow, it looks doable on the M6xx engines, but tricky on the M116/M117 engines!

Yet another wonderful addition to the site!!
My 560SEL idles quite smoothly, but I can feel a vibration when the car is in "park", but can barely feel it when in "drive" at a stoplight for example. Thinking this is due to the change in revs. Drops down to about 800-900 when in drive. (If I recall correctly?) Is this indicitive of worn motor mounts? |

Once again!!
I sure hope you have that server backed up well; so I can rely on it forever (or until my Benz is worn out... 300K, 400Kmiles from now ....approx. 25yrs. ). Have you considered a mirror of this site somewhere...just in case?

Thanks, guys
Jbaj007 - the whole thing is mirrored on my home machine whoch, given the reliaboility of Microsoft products, gives me a 50% survival chance.
W126 - Hmmm, not sure on the V8 which inherently idles much more smoothly. I have the same problem on my 560SEL and there is a lot of discussion on this board of the problem with fixes including new injectors, injector seals, fuel filters, idle valves, spark plugs, spark plug coils, gasoline (!) and fuel distributor overhauls. I've tried most of these (except the coils and distributor overhaul) and still have the stumble/roughness at idle - more like an occasional miss. Your mounts would have to be pretty much destroyed for you to feel them on the smooth, lazy V8. Unless your mileage is very high and/or you have fuel leaking on them, I doubt they are the cause. Maybe others can comment? |

It was tuned up a few months ago and all the electrics checked out OK.
My guess is a vacum leak or an issue with the fuel distributor. It's odd because you can really feel it when in park, but just barely when the brake is applied and you're in drive. Other than that, the motor is silky smooth and the MPG and overall performance is what it should be. |

if I had a digi cam I'd probably do a page like that about my 190, I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate it, but until then

Thomas,
Did you take this section off your site? Maybe I am blind but I can't find it... Thanks,

Good job Thomas. I think the prior mechanic probably "forgot" to install the passenger side shield, I can't see the factory not installing one.
For those with the M116/117's the process is nearly identical. Big exception being that everything is done from below. Harder to get the 6mm bolts lined up and in as it has to be done by feel. I also found that it was much easier to align the main bolt by leaving the two 6mm bolt loose and only tightening everything down after both sides are done. You still have to move the engine using a suitable lever though. I would also strongly suggest doing one side at a time as there is less chance of the whole engine assembly shifting out of position. One really sees the difference between new and old mount when viewed in profile

Thanks, Mike
Interestingly, I found a reference in the v8 engine manual that says there's a heat shield on the driver's side only. Do you have one on each side in your 560SEL?

Yessir, heat shields on both sides. At first I couldn't even see them as they were completely covered in grime. They cleaned up nicely though.
I also found that the years and miles had caused the shield to be pushed down into the collapsed mounts. This effect seems to be part of the reason for having to lift the engine so high, to gain clearance to get the shields out. I just went out to the car and snapped a shot of the passenger side shield. Couldn't get a shot of the driver's side - no room. The shield was covered in the same gunk you see of the support arm. Just years and years or road grime.
