idle speed drop

Hello, my first time on the forum, I have a 1994 c 220 111 engine and every once and awhile the rpm's drops to five hundred rpm's or so. At the same time under the drivers side footwell I hear a clicking noise much like a flasher relay. It usually only is noticable when in drive or reverse. The drop in rpms coincides with this clicking. There are no other problems or complaints in performance. The vehicle has 94000 miles with proper maintenance. I also notice that when this occurs it sounds like the alternator pitch changes. The alternator went south about a year ago and was replaced. Thanks for any help. regards Jerry
