after 2 hours dismantling the fi i noticed that the supplementary air line from the air filter to the control slide housing was not connected.Would this acccount for the excessive fuel consumption?

No, that air has yet to be metered. Once the engine is warm closing that line shouldn't drop the idle speed. When cold plugging the line should kill the motor. If the air slide doesn't close the cold enrichment is also still engaged.
