Unhappy driver's seat woes

My 1994 Euro C180 (right hand drive) has a driver's seat with a manual adjustment, but it usually drops by 1 level everytime I get into the seat. Very annoying. Also makes a loud crank sound like something's loose. What can I do to stop this or fix it? I normally raise the seat's level until I can see the whole Mercedes star from my seat. This is almost the highest you can go, but my knees are held back by the unadjustable steering wheel. If only this can be adjusted also. I have not looked under the seat yet to find the culprit causing this headache. The seat's backrest feels less firm and secure compared to the front passenger's seat which is very firm the way it should be.
