Hello,
On a Federal 1989 260E, removing the resistor did improve acceleration in the mid range(3000rpm and above). I have used a stopwatch to verify this. The car WILL pink(ping) on the 89 octane gasoline in USA when accelerating WOT above 3000rpm, so the use of 93 octane is mandatory with this modification. The EZL knocks back the ignition timing severely when operating in high ambient temps with high engine coolant temp anyway. Your results may vary.

Interesting Thread - Retarding/Advancing Timing

This is an interesting tread ...............

For years, Mercedes Benz has provided avenues for adjusting timing.

I have a 1959 300SL, and a 190SL (Same Year). Both cars have a little dial on the dash board, which is used for retarding/advancing timing depending on fuel octane (Pretty advanced for vehicles built 45 years ago.) My experience with this little dial? It does work as intended.

Point being, why would Mercedes provided a means to adjust timing, if it were no use?, and why would they provide this for so many years?

I know, this is an ancient thread, but as this is the very best I found, I must bump it! CHRIS MARTENS's second post (also thanks to Paul Wurms) with the ignition timings is priceless. Checking the data is very informative and answers every questions one could have with EZL adjusting. It is very helpful for members without the EZL knob, but also for those who have a knob. In this later case it's clear that only the 260E (M103) engine is the one could gain from EZL adjusting, turning the dial into the "1" position. All other engines are at the maximum timing retard with the factory S setting. His post also clears up that the increasing numbers on the dial DO NOT mean less or more advance timing. They simply correspond to different values, therefore checking and understanding this data before one makes any modification to the factory setting is crucial. Thank you very much once again, now, 8 years later.
