I have an '86 MB 300E (automatic) which has recently developed an anoying, and getting louder, squeak in the gear shift area (only when driving).
The shift lever vibrates a little and when I hold it tight against the side to keep it from vibrating, the squeak is greatly diminished if not eliminated. The more the lever vibrates, (such as when I hit bumps), the louder the squeak. I'd appreciate any educated guesses. Thanks. |

Have you checked the lower gear shift bushings? They are at either end of the shift rod which goes from the bottom of the shift lever to the bracket on the nuetral safety switch. (usually rattles but worth a try) Good Luck, Phill

Probably the bushing. Changed mine and the vibration stopped. Bushing cost me less than $10 and labor was about $70. Took roughly 1/2 hr for the job.

You had better take a look at the crossmember mounts for the transmission. You should not be getting the degree of vibration you describe through the shift linkage. If you are, then the tranny is moving around. Check it out..
