cylinder head R&R -1984 500 SEL -Questions

Visual/Logical diagnoses from blue smoke on start up only- no smoking after warm up - does seem to run rich at idle though. Am going to first test with compression test and cylinder leakdown test before disassembly. Have CD manual and subscribe to the ALLDATADIY.com ? online manual. Questions: 1. Does anybody know where to rent the valve spring compressor for the 117.963 engine? 2. Any other test I should perform before takedown? Will my ball hex sockets set be Ok for the head bolts or does a person really need that offset one (8mm D shaped)?

Am doing the timing chain R&R/ rails tensioner at same time.

Thanks. will try to take pics during procedure for help for the next person attempting this.

Look for any post by Thomaspin and check his website referenced in his sig line. He has documented the process.

You can use a generic c-clamp type valve spring compressor once the heads are off the car. Most auto parts store rent or lend this tool. Kragen has it for $6/day. If you're working on the heads in the car, the kind of valve spring compressor that hooks on the cam is cheap enough to buy rather than rent.

thanks sixto...

I PM'd Thomaspin but he has not had the heads off the V8 so he suggested I post here and....
.... that is a big help knowing a regular c compressor will work when heads are off.. manuals almost make it seem like you MUST have the special compressor ($200 item)... again thanks, sixto. I am hoping it is just the stem seals but want to prepare and test for other problems. Some post here last week the poster had his torn down and someone claimed should have done the leakdown test before teardown so am doing that and the compression test and hopefully have a good handle on what is required before even starting.

I think Sixto was referring to the timing chain and rails R&R, both illustrated on my site on the V8 - one on an M116 380 engine, the other on an M117 560.

Thanks Thomaspin ...

I've spent a lot of time on your site looking at the timing chain procedures and they will be very helpful for that part of it.

Was most curious about the necessity of the offset hex sockets for the V-8 head removal on the 117.963... and if the specialized valve spring compresor was required. sixto was very helpful on that.

I've learned a lot on the A/C procedure you posted also.. saved a lot of time.... appreciate your thoroughness and warnings.

Thanks again.

I can't imagine how can can pull M116/7 heads without the offset 8mm hex bit tool. I suppose you could cut a hex key and use a crow's foot on it. So there, I imagined it Do yourself a favor and buy the tool.

I got mine off and on without the offset, but I did use a a hex key socket with a 6" bit.

If you don't have a proper compressor, there is no way you will be able to adjust the hydraulic lash compensators, though. You have to compress the spring to remove the rocker arm to change the "hockey puck."
