I am starting a search for a 1995 E420 which will be driven in Nebraska. In the past I have installed snow tires on all 4 wheels for the winter season. Does any one have first hand experience with the 1995 era E420 in snow and with or without the ASR slip control option? I am afraid that even with snow tires, this model might not go too well in snow without the ASR option. On the other hand, can the ASR option be partially disabled like the newer models? I assume the performance would be better on dry roads without the ASR kicking in.

I have no experience driving with ASR in the snow but the cars came with a disconnect button to deactivate ASR and the icon is a tire with snowchains on. The explanation I got was that with snow tires you needed some slip to penetrate the snow. From running these cars on the dyno I know that if the ASR is engaged the car doesn't accelerate at all.

Two versions of the ASR. One says "ASR Off".
This one works best, it is the later of the two versions. The first version does not totally disable the ASR, and has a snow tire on the switch, and many customers find that this is not quite good enough in the snow, especially in an unplowed parking lot... ------------------ |
