Hi again. I am taking the advice given in an earlier post to look at the 560 SLs as the best in the W107 series.. In searching for the "right" 560SL I find some very low mileage cars, 30K-40k, and some times less (even in older model SLs). Are there potential problems to watch for in these cars? Questions to ask? Thanks.

I think one with that age should have some miles on it. That will insure that it has had some driving time in the last few years...Have it looked over by a MB tech!!!

I (personally) would purchase a California car. Check out http://www.********losgatos.com/list.htm. They have an unbelievable stock of "pristine" older SLs. They also only sevice MBZ -- they are where I take my 2.3-16V for servicing.

Good Luck!

Brian

I know someone who bought a one owner 1988 560SL (signal red with palomino) for around 32K. The car is absolutely flawless. We're talking concours here. It only has 30K miles on it and the only sign that it has ever been off the showroom floor is the slight shine of the steering wheel rim where the car has been driven. When they bought the car, the hardtop would not come off because some cable involved with the mounting of the hardtop on the car had stretched. I can attest to the fact that even with such low miles this car drives perfect and has lots of power. Good luck with your purchase.

A lot of people had these as second or third cars, so mileage can be low. Just make sure the car was maintained and your all set.

Had an '87 560SL in the shop the other day with 3,900 (yes, 3,900) original miles on it! Burgundy with Palomino interior and a black soft top. Talk about immaculate. The only thing I don't like about 560SLs compared to ther 107 cars is the fact that they are quite noisy. I know it's a huge engine under the hood, but my 450SL and no 380SL I've ever been in are as 'audible'. I guess MB figured guys would like to hear the grunt of 5.6 litres pulling strognly down the freeway.
