I am having my father(electrical engineer) take apart the cruise module and check all conections, but I am wondering what a rebuild actually consists of. Thanks for the help.

Replacement of the known faulty components and related parts. Then a bench test. Most of the time it is the IC chips that fail.

I've come across a couple of DITY techniques:
1. resolder all connections using a high grade electronics flux and then clean using deionized water and use compressed air to blow dry. 2. Replace the LM-2901 comparator chip and the DUAL gate N-channel FET. Both are available at Radio Shack. 3. Buy a rebuild from this board (that's my choice). Best of Luck. The cruise control for the '85 (and I think back to '81) uses a digital counter scheme. I am not familiar with the particulars, but I have seen the innards, and am sure of that much, judging by the parts used, etc... My original post a couple of months ago dealt with the earlier analog version, as found on my '78 and others. It uses an LM-2901, and a Cap/FET for storage of the set speed. The "newer" version probably uses TTL and a flip flop to store the set speed as a digital number. If your dad is over 35 years old, it may bring back waves of collegiate nostalgia. Good luck.
