anyway I've got a 95 E320 wagon and a 95 E420. both have the LED as well as the X11 multipin connector. I apparently need to go build the DIY LED tester and then check for codes becuse my E420 is way sick.

I am a little confused as to what is analog and what is digital, are my 95's both?
Your cars are both OBDI flash code reading only, and you have two different connectors - the 320 is 16 pin and the 420 is 38 pin. It's the same code reader but requires different sized pins - the Radio Shack banana plugs for the 320 and about 20 gauge wire for the 420. The 16 pin has a built in LED but the 38 pin does not, although it may have a separate 8 pin connector nearby that does have an LED.
