Unhappy leaking engine block

I can see some oil residue(wet) around the engine block to the left front just above the alternator. I thought these engines have gasket leaks towards the back right hand side? Mine is a 1994 C180 Euro and done 193,000kms. The plastic floor pan has oil residue(wet) and dirt throughout looking from just above the radiator and power steering reservoir. I sprayed with degreaser and cleaned up to see if it will come back sometime in the future. Last service in March, my tech said the block was leaking and mentioned a horrendous cost to have it fixed with new gasket, head off, and some work on valves, check the timing chain and guides, possibly replacing if required. Wish I could do all these myself, but I am no techie and am at their mercy!
