noise at idle

I just purchased a 1997 C230. 100k, runs good, at idle i hear a "rattling sound", disappears above idle.
I listen to it and traced it back to the front of the block under the black plastic cap with the logo on.
Anyone have an idea what this could be.

Thanks in advance

Mike

I'd say timing chain needs replacement, sounds about right at 100K too.

I would be on the tensioner shock bushing and possibly the shock as well.

More than likely, I would agree with the second poster that the issue is a loose chain caused by a failed chain tensioner. In general, the chains on these motors are very stout and will run for well over a 100k miles. The tensioners, though, do fail and can be replaced.

My recommendation would be to change out the tensioner.

If you elect to change out the chain, it is not a very big job; but, does require a few special tools not usually owned by the DIYer. (Dremel tool to cut a link and a chain link press).

Thanks for the replies.

How soon would you recommend to replace the chain, tensioner. I need to take a 500 mile round trip this coming weekend. You guys see any problems with that.

yes. if it is a chain problem and the thing breaks or the guides crack and get lodged casuing the chain to snap or stick, you ae looking at som emajor repairs - could damage top and bottom end. to make matter worse, you will be stranded as well as upset. take it to an mb mech and pop the valve covers off and check the chain .

I was listening to it under the hood, took the black cover off. It seems to be coming for the round "thing" mounted into the block.

Any guesses ?

All I can say is what I said before. We had the exact same noise in the exact same spot on our C220, and it was the tensioner shock assembly. This is apparently a fairly common problem after 50K or so miles.

I had the car in the shop. It was the Belt tensioner shock,
since they were at it I had them replace the Belt also.

No more noise.
