300e parking brake pedal problem

On my 88 300ce the parking brake pedal mechanism has just broken because, upon release of the brake, the pedal no longer comes all the way up, causing the red brake light to come on unless I raise the pedal with my toe. In my search, Benzmac said that the spring is the problem but the entire assembly needs to be replaced. Access on the driver sidewall seems difficult, since I can't even see the spring or the switch triggering the light. Is a DIY job, & if so how is it done? Other than the annoying light, can this repair safely be deferred?
I'm starting to wonder if my wife is right when she says enough with buying these old cars (but the red/cream coupe with AMG bodykit & upgraded red side molding rides so well & looks so good).
TIA to all.
Rich
