Question S 600 difference 600 SEL ?

Hello,
Can anyone advise if there is a technical difference between a s600 and 600 SEL, 1991 model? or was the SEL made only in 1991?
any input would be appreciated.
Michael

I'm no expert but

Here is the States,(we're always a year behind Europe) the 1992-93 MB S Class Flagship Sedan(saloon for you folks on the other side of the pond) with the V12 engine was dubbed 600SEL. In 1994 MB (again at least here in the states) went to a different naming convention and put the class designation first followed by the engine size. So the 1994-2001 S Class Sedan (saloon)with the V12 were designated S600. The Big Coupe (2 door) in both V12 and V8 variety went from 600SEC/500SEC to CL600/CL500 respectively. As for differences, I'm sure there were minor changes made over the lifespan of the vehicle. Similar to those changes undergone by the 86-95 W124 E Class. Hope this helps at least a little bit

still inaccurate, i think.

i have a 1997 w140 coupe. it is badged S500[also true for S600 coupe].the w140sedan was also badged S500[also true for S600 sedan]. this is unlike my w126's which were badged S560SEL[sedan] AND S560SEC[coupe].

for the remainder of the w140's production run[1998-1999 model years], the sedans continued to be badged as S500, S600. the coupes, however, were badged as CL500, CL600.

i think that successor[2000-2003] S class coupes continue to carry the CL prefix.

at least that is the reality in my part of metroHouston.

The 500SEC/600SEC were later rebadged as the S500/S600, I guess it was supposed to be obvious you were looking at a coupe, but it was confusing as the badging was identical to the sedans.
Then later, as it was pointed out, it changed to CL500/CL600, guess even Mercedes was confused by identical coupe and sedan markings. I believe the change was made at the same time the injection system went to ME1.0, which also coincided with the intro of the 722.6 transmission.
Albert, the 126 model badging never has an S prefix, it was always the engine size first, no "S" before the engine size.
Now the S Class coupe is given a unique model designation and model number. The S Class sedan is a 220 chassis, and what "amounts" to an S Class coupe is the CL Class, which is a 215 chassis. Prior to this, for example the 140 Coupe was still a 140 chassis designation, and also the 126 Chassis coupe was still a 126 chassis.
