I am just trying to find out where and what an accumulator is. I have the CD for my year car and can find now reference for it. One person said it's back by the fuel tank. The only thing I find back there is the pump, filer and fuel resevoir. I am having a problem with a rough idle. I replaced the plugs and found that all but one plug is white. The other plug is very black and carboned. The idle is better but still a little rough. It also starts wonderfully when cold, but hot takes a little tender care. Any help would be appreciated

The accumulator plays absolutely no part in the running fuel system. It is located next to the fuel filter and fuel pump under the car.
Its purpose is to maintain fuel pressure in the sealed, shut-off fuel system. This is necessary to prevent boiling the fuel in the injectors during the heat soak after hot shut-off. This boiling can cause vapor lock and difficult or impossible hot restarts. Since the accumulator plays no part in the running, I would find the running problem and fix it before worrying if the accumulator is affecting your hot starting. ------------------ Steve Brotherton Owner 24 bay BSC Bosch Master, ASE master L1 26 years MB technician |
