terrible clicking noise while running

76 450slc trying to restore.
after restoring the inside took for a test ride and heard terrible clicking noise. i could not tell where it was coming from but i think i have narrowed it down to the valves and rocker arms on the passenger side or the transmission.
the car seems to go into gear ok and reverse without much trouble but the car won't go about 38mph floored.
if it is the cylinder head on the driver side can this be rebuilt at a machine shop and cost?
i really can't tell where the heavy clicking noise is coming from.
can you get this loud noise from the transmission?

I'd stop running it immediately and and tow it to a mechanic to have it looked at. You may have a timing chain jumped off time by one tooth on the cam gear. If it's still running at all, you haven't bent any valves yet, but if it jumps another tooth you'll bend valves and necessitate removal of the heads (much much more $).

If the timing chain guide rails are old, have them replaced! They are a common cause of timing chain failures in these motors.

A collapsed ball stud or a worn rocker or cam can may a very loud and distinctive tapping or knocking noise that varies with RPM. Do a search on "ball stud" - lots of info available. IMHE, a loose chain is more of a steady rattle. Neither is a good noise.
