auto trans oil change?
after 125K miles, the tranny went POP...
main shaft gears / splines stripped ![]() G/box re-built. now, 10K miles later, would you replace the fluid as a precaution? the 90 quid (150 dollars) + labour vs 1500 quid (2K dollars) for a tranny rebuild in another 40K miles. this is a high mileage (for the UK) car, and the box was re-built in a slightly dirty looking garage.. I'm just thinking that the dirt / bedding in of new box bits would benifit from having this done. Its the later style w/s (rather than s/e type) box guy

Some knowledgeable people say trans fluid / filter changes every 15 thousand miles - that seems so often in my opinion. If your putting big miles in a short time, fluid filter change every fifty thousand miles is maybe more affordable. But at least your on the right track with doing a trans/fluid change in the 10 to 15 thousand mile range with the idea of removing break in particles from the trans.
Also do you come to a COMPLETE stop when shifting from reverse to drive? In the U.S. Mercedes rebuilt transmissions are a good deal, not cheap but piece of mind. |

Is your car a 1998 or latter?
the sealed box conundrum. A guess you have a MB 722.6 trans, it takes special fluid that is pricey, and that is the only fluid period, a special dip stick tool to read fluid level, and a filler tube cap. But I have the same trans, I researched and change the fluid every fifty thousand miles in mine. Do a search on this site, cause I think Mercedes made a few improvements for when you change fluid, like a special magnet in the pan to collect debris, and a few other items that may not be all that important to worry about, but educate yourself by searching the 722.6 transmission. Don't you sleep, it's like three o'clock in the morning on the isle. |
