Please help me identify this part...

While changing my wiring harness, I came across two small parts that I have a question about. This is a picture of the front of the M104 engine. What are the two small cone-shaped parts at the bottom of the silver box on the left of the picture? They just plug onto two small posts and they have a fine screen inside. As you'll note in the second picture, the base of these parts are cracked. What do they do?

Thanks!

I'm still hoping to find out what these are.

Will the cracks affect anything?

Anyone???

The general parts involved are switch-over valves. One is for the EGR valve, the other is for the AIR divert valve (they are both located inside that goldish metal bracket). Vacuum is applied to the appropriate component (which is why there is a vacuum tube running to them) and each is individually controlled by the engine control module (which is why there are 2 wiring connectors). The small runner parts are kind of like filters. When the vacuum is released from these valves (control units shut off the EGR valve or AIR divert valve) they should shut immediately. The vacuum is released, and what you need to have happen is ordinary air to get sucked into the vacuum hoses rather quicky. So they install these filter parts so that you don't end up getting alot of dirt sucked into the vacuum hoses when the valve is deactivated. The air all comes through these filters.

I wouldn't sweat it all that much, you may even need to buy the valves to get new ones, maybe not.

Dennis, those pics are amazingly clear. Everytime I try to reduce the photos I take with my digital camera they come out too small or look grainy. I'm sure I'm not doing something right, so how's the harness replacement coming?

I can check out for you if this bracket is availlable separetely or not.

Sorry Dennis that it took so long to answer.
I was working this weekend, had to switch computers and still have problems with my Internet connection. Normaly I am using an iMac Apple but I had to buy a PC as well to read the EPC from MB...
The worst thing is I can't find what you are asking for!
The EPC takes some time to understand! One never knowes where MB put an item. As your switch-over valves : are they under FG (chassis) in group 54 Electrical equipement and instrument , 80 Vacuum system , 82 Electrical system or under M (engine) at 07 Injection or 14 Intake and exhaust manifolds (found partly my vacuum system there!) ? I also checked under GA 27 MB Autotranny...This last one is very interesting as it gives schemas but only information about fittings, elbows...But I saw your dual switch-over valves there.
The worst of everything is that I can't even find my own vac system : when I found something resembling than I got a
"Callout non valid with this BM". Resembling yes : there seemes never to be exactly the same system in a car and the EPC...
Fortunately, next sunday my friend and MB-indy promised me to spend the entire sunday with me to learn me the EPC !
We"ll see...

Why don't I have a friend or collegue as clever as you?
I"ll try it out and give my pc to an enemy.
Thanks again!

I think you'll find them both in Gp 14, intake and exhaust manifolds. Where ever you finf the EGR valve, that's where it should be.

Remember I believe he's looking for those rubber tubes for on the vavlves though, not the bracket. i'd be interested in knowing if you can buy an individual valve, or just the set of 2 including the bracket.

Thanks Guys!

Gilly, that explanation really helps a lot. I'm interested to know if I can get those still, but if not I'll just put a little silicone sealer around the base so I at least know that the air will be passing through the screens like it's supposed to.

JetForeman: I'm using an HP720 on the medium resolution setting. The pictures are around 500K each. I use a combination of the software that came with the camera and MS Photo editor ito reduce them. I'm surprised too - they come out pretty good.

My '94 E320 is done. I'll update the other thread "Code 6 idle problem" to keep it all in one place.

Thanks.

The numer for that hose is 1170780981

The dual switchover valve is 0025400697 to the end of 96(941/991/994/995) or 0015408697 from 97 (941/991/994/995)

I had to replace the whole gizmo on my W124 a few months ago.

Great pics man!

This valve is used in other MBs, and in other MB applications, so the cones are just vacuum "shunts", for lack of a better word.

They are part of the switchover valve and I had to procure the entire unit from the dealer ($116 I think). Phil at FastLane printed up a diagram for me to identify the part, but alas, he didn't have it in stock. Bring the old part along if you plan to replace it...I had a tough time telling the parts guy here what I was referring to.

I would also contend from Gilly's comments that I got no improvement in performance as a result of the replacement. But I'm chasing down vacuum problems, so everything vacuum-wise was getting replaced if it needed it.
