Anyone tried code reader INNOVA 3100?

Wife's 98 C280 has the check engine lite on and off several times for the past several month. I think it was the gas cap thing. But this time it stays lit for couple weeks. Car drives fine. I bought the code reader from Kragen for $99 plus tax. Connected to the car and it went through the reading sequence as stated in the manual. No code is retrieved, yet the check engine lite is still on?

Got P0173, P0170

Tried again, got codes: P0173, P0170. Generic codes are for "Fuel trim malfunction for Bank1 and bank 2". Is the MAF acting up?

Those 2 codes are making reference to either a rich condition or lean condition that is beyond the adjustable limits of the ECU. If you look them up the areas to check are:

1. Intake leak
2. Fuel press. regulator
3. Injectors

It doesn't make any reference to a faulty MAF, that would be a separate code.
