Beginning today, everytime I place the car in-reverse the Lamp Out indicator light comes on. I had a friend check the rear and both lamps are working. I checked both bulbs and they are good, working german made bulbs (from the MB dealer). I switched lamps from side to side, still did not fix the problem.

Any ideas? PS. I hate to drive around with a light on the dash indicating something amiss, drives me crazy, so must fix. )

Check the third brake light. I'll bet it's out.. Also make sure you have OEM bulbs all around..

Thinking about it, I removed all bulbs and reseated and they seems to have taken care of the problem.

BTW, I was looking at the bulb assy. and noticed that on the inboard side, bottom row, one bulb is missing (doesn't even have contacts)the other side has one though. Should there be a bulb there, as there are not contacts to pull it into, or are the contracts broken or missing.

Currently the system is now working perfectly, and all lamps are working.

thanks again...jim

I saw the same thing on mine when I was changing the lens to grey/red, it actually has no bulb in it while the otherside has the contact and a bulb. I have no clue what it is for. As my car is a Euro I figured it was just some wierd Euro option. I am now wondering if I could do some soldering and turn both sides into extra brake lights but I have to know what their purpose is first.......anybody.

This is probably your rear "fog" lamp. I do not know if it is an option on the E320 There is only one in the rear on selected models. To activate the rear fog lamp, with the headlamps or parking light on, pull the headlight switch out two clicks. (On my 93 300E, the first click turn on the front fog lights and the second click turned on the rear fog light -- when rear fog light is turn on, the center of the headlight switch lights up amber). Hope this apples to your model and hope it helps.

Extra sockets are for fog lights. Not legal in USA on both sides. Usually found on euro spec cars. At least that's what I've heard. My 300E's have the same setup..
