Question 103 oil filter same as 102?

I just picked up an oil filter from the local dealer for a 91 300e (103 motor). He said that MB was standardizing oil filters, and that the new correct filter for my car was a 102 184 05 01. I guess the number means that this filter was originally intended for a 102 motor. I asked the parts guy if he was positve that this was the correct filter and he said yes. Has anyone else received a 102 filter for their 103?

Yes, this is correct, EXCEPT for the first year or two that they brought the 190E 2.3 into the US. The early 102 had a small canister-type oil filter, not a spin-on. But yes, after that the 102 and 103 had the same oil filter, which started with "102".

He said that MB was standardizing oil filters,
But this is BS. There are some filters that are shared, but MB can hardly go back in time and "standardize" things.
For example most of the 61 series Diesels are common filters, as are 60 series Diesels except the 606, Most of the earlier V8's, like the 116 and 117 are common to each other, the 112/113 use the same filter and so on, but no way can MB make one type of filter for all these cars. The guy was just trying to get you out of his face.

Most questions about parts can be answered by going to FastLane and looking up the part(s).

For example, the 1991 190E 2.3 and the 1991 300E show the same oil filters (either Knecht or Bosch).

I agree that the comment by the parts guy was BS.

I do see that the same filter is listed in FastLane for both the 102 & 103. The last filters I got were Knecht OC 110. That filter is about 2 inches longer that the 102 184 05 01 that I got from the dealer. So, I wanted to make sure that the 102 filter was OK. Thanks to all for your help.
