My beloved 83 300 td wagon has started to shake wildely after warming up. When it's cold, no problems. The car has 152k miles and gets regular service. The car runs w/no problems when the idle is raised.

help!
fuel injector problem? vacuum problem?
all suggestions are welcome. I really love this car!

Andrew,

Do a search for Rack Bolt. I changed mine, and made a WORLD of difference. You need to have the engine hot to change it and get it adjusted correctly, so be prepared to spend a little while sweating over the engine compartment. I purchased mine for $23. An updated version came out in 1985, and it cures most of that shaking. Mine got so bad that people would stare at me at stoplights, and you couldn't carry on a conversation without your voice sounding like Catherine Hepburn.
Good Luck!!

Have the compression checked! My '84 300D began to start hard, smoke alot, and sh-sh-sh-shake at idle. I spent time and money on the idle rack dampening srew, fuel filters, start of delivery timing adjustment, injectors, etc. before I threw up my hands in frustration and took it in for a compression check. The #3 cylinder made less than 200psi. One valve job later and I was back in business. The valve guides were worn on cyl. #3, preventing the valves from seating properly. I was told that even at 200K miles, there isn't much call for valve work on these motors, and I wouldn't jump to tearing off the head without the recommendation of a trusted and qualified mechanic, but the symptoms sound familiar.

Thanks for everything!!

I tried adjusting the rack bolt..NG

I searched on rack bolt and found a reply informing the owner of the vehicle to check the idle of the engine. I found by pushing on the engine "Stop" lever the engine smoothed out completely. I got my trusty manual out and found the idle adjustment screw, backed out the lock nut, made the adjustment, retightened the lock nut, and she is so smmmoooooth again!!!

Now.. how do I increase turbo boost? MORE POWER...I NEED MORE POWER!

THANKS AGAIN, ANDREW
