E320 Starting Sound

Over the past several weeks my 1996 E320 (W210, M104, 94K) twice made a groaning sound for abount a third of a second before spinning the motor normally to start. It sounded like the starter was laboring heavily for the third of a second, and then all was normal. Something is going bad. Any speculation on what is the problem?

How old is your battery? Very wierd things happen when batteries start to die.

It sounds like your battery is weak. Batteries have a life span of about 3-4 years.

I bought the car used over 2 years ago. The battery is a Mercedes brand which indicates that it may be the original battery. Sounds like new battery time.

I noticed that my car was doing the same over the last couple of weeks and turning over slower than it had in the past. On T-day it repeatedly started and stalled until on the 6th try it just clicked. I got an ABS and BAS light also. (I read later that this is one of those weird things that happen when the voltage goes below 10V.) I checked my MB maintenance free battery and discovered it required some maintenance. It was really low on water, so I added some and the car started no problem about 3 hours later.

Knowing that this absolutely could not be the end of this, I visited my local MB indy and he checked the charging system. He determined that it was charging as it should, but the battery was junk. He sells Interstate batteries, but advised me "there's no better battery for your particular car than the factory battery" He went on to say it was due to all the electrical gadgetry and the battery being inside the cabin under the back seat for this model. So off to the dealer I went, got a battery for $117 and change and installed it. The dealer even disposed of my old battery for free. Wow, what a difference. It turns over very quickly now and starts flawlessly. It took a bit of fooling around to get everything operating as it had in the past, radio code, windows, sunroof open/hold for three seconds etc. At the risk of cursing myself, all seems well for now. I wish all car problems were so easily and inexpensively resolved.

Hey I wonder if anyone else has had this strange slow groan before cranking problem. I've had the same problem, and now some new symptoms. Car is a W210 M104 E320 (1996).
I have a new Optima battery and a new alternator about ten months ago. This was to not related to the starter issues, but to replace the worn out alternator (brushes) and not-too-old battery ( under warranty - Advance auto parts determined it was shot, who am I to argue)

New symptoms started a week ago:
It strains when the key is first turned (10v), then begins to crank slower than usual (11v).
Idle: 13v
Idle in gear w/AC, all accessories: 11.98v
Engine off: 12.96v
Starting, as best as I can measure with my digital MM: 10v min, 11v while cranking normally
I think it's a starter motor issue, but I'm worried that there is a relay/solenoid/wiring/terminal issue I need to troubleshoot; the first step in that troubleshoot is Mercedesshop.com
TIA, -Tom

Well, after ignoring the obvious (what I now know is slow, labored starting and occasional "snag" in the start) for a year or more, my wife went shopping and the car chose not to start in the Publix lot. Retaliation for putting that mid-grade gas in last month, no doubt.

When I got the old starter out it had a cooked smell; got my money's worth from that one. Got the new one from Advance, their site said it was the Bosch rebuilt but when it came in it was not Bosch. I told them Autozone had their rebuilt (DuraCrap brand) for $119 and they matched it. The install was straightforward.

The new starter sounds like it spins a lot faster, and the car jolts to life faster - it sounds like a jap car!! I am eager to hear another car like mine start so I can see if that's normal. (Anyone)?

There, I've answered my own question. The sound was not normal.
-Tom
